Intranasal Flu Vaccine: A New Development Highlighted at a Scientific Event in the UAE

Prominent medical professionals participated in a scientific event organized by the American Academy of Pediatrics in collaboration with the Emirates Pediatric Society to present the latest advancements in influenza vaccination.

Dr. Entisar Al Hammadi, President of the Emirates Pediatric Society, explained that the newly introduced influenza vaccine stands out for its nasal spray delivery, replacing traditional needle injections. This innovation makes vaccination simpler, faster, and completely painless.
She noted that the vaccine is currently approved for individuals aged 2 to 49, while ongoing studies aim to expand its use to other age groups in the future. Dr. Ahmad Al Hammadi clarified that the current age limitation relates to weaker immune responses among the elderly, as the use of live attenuated viruses may occasionally trigger stronger symptoms compared to inactivated injectable vaccines.
She emphasized the importance of carefully balancing benefits and potential risks in all medical recommendations, and highlighted the need for annual vaccination due to the influenza virus’s tendency to mutate and change its form each season.

Dr. Ahmed Al Hammadi, Infectious Diseases Consultant and Chairman of the Emirates Society for Infectious Diseases, added that the Emirates Medical Association’s participation in the conference and the introduction of the new vaccine reflect ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination. He underlined that the initiative seeks to promote safe and effective preventive options, including modern, non-invasive vaccines such as the nasal spray, which provides both safety and convenience. This participation, he said, also supports national health strategies aimed at reducing influenza transmission and protecting high-risk populations.

Dr. Islam Al Baroudi, Professor and Consultant of Pediatrics, Vice President of the Association, and Chief Medical Officer of KidsHeart Centers, described the vaccine’s launch in the region as a major milestone. He noted that offering a needle-free option can help overcome children’s fear of injections and increase parental acceptance of vaccination.
Dr. Al Baroudi explained that clinical studies have confirmed the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, and that it is now available in pharmacies across the UAE following its successful adoption in the United States and Europe. He also highlighted that the nasal vaccine provides dual protection—stimulating both local immunity in the nasal passages (the primary entry route for influenza viruses) and systemic immunity throughout the body.

In a symbolic gesture during the event, the association celebrated its entry into the Guinness World Records by forming an anti-flu logo using medical masks. This creative act served as a reminder of the continued importance of preventive measures, such as wearing masks, washing hands, and avoiding close contact during illness.
Participating doctors emphasized that such practices—proven highly effective during the COVID-19 pandemic—should remain a permanent part of community health culture to protect society from infectious diseases
